STORRS, CT — A water main broke near the University of Connecticut early Friday morning on a day when what school officials called "a significant number" of students began returning to their residence halls on the Storrs campus in efforts to avoid Saturday's predicted snowfall.

The water main is located below Route 195, UConn officials said. It had been causing traffic complications near the Buckley and Shippee residence hall complexes, located across from the campus entry near Mirror Lake, officials said.

That part of Route 195 was closed until the afternoon while repairs were made, officials said.

Students were allowed to move into those residence halls, but detours were in place and vehicles were backed up in some areas.

UConn was asking drivers to avoid the area if possible.

Some buildings in the area — including Buckley and Shippee — were without water service.
