2-Alarm Fire Displaces 7 In Meriden

Crews quickly extinguished the fire despite being hampered by a vehicle parked in front of the hydrant, according to a report.

MERIDEN, CT — Seven people were displaced from their home after a 2-alarm fire Wednesday in Meriden, according to officials.

The American Red Cross is helping two families – four adults and three children – after the fire on Randolph Avenue.

“The Red Cross also provided a recovery envelope containing information helpful to families recovering from a fire, including tips on cleanup; notification of important contacts; dealing with damaged items and more,” officials wrote in a news release. “The Red Cross is also providing comfort kits containing personal care items such as deodorant, toothbrushes, shaving supplies and other items a resident might need when suddenly displaced from their home by a fire.”

The Record-Journal reported the fire broke out just before midnight on Wednesday in the second floor of a home in the 60 block of Randolph Avenue.

A fire official told the Record-Journal crews extinguished with fire within 10 to 15 minutes, despite being hampered from getting a supply line of water because a vehicle was parked in front of the hydrant.

"We urge people not to block fire hydrants!" officials wrote in a post on the Meriden Fire Local 1148 union's Facebook page. "This is the second fire in six months where a fire hydrant was blocked by a vehicle."
