6-Year-Old Child Dies In Meriden Go-Kart Accident: Police [UPDATE]

Police responded to a call reporting a juvenile crashing a go-kart Tuesday evening.

MERIDEN, CT — A 6-year-old child died in a go-kart accident on Tuesday evening in Meriden, police said. A 4-year-old was also in the go-kart when the crash occurred.

Police responded at 7:43 p.m. to 88 Westview Drive in the area of Kronenberger Park to a report of an accident, according to police.

Officers found two boys, ages 6 and 4, who had apparently crashed a go-kart while driving in the parking lot of Kronenberger Park.

The go-kart collided with and rode under a closed swing gate. The gate was intended to stop vehicles from driving onto the athletic fields, police said.

A 6-year-old, who had been wearing a helmet, suffered a serious head injury. A Life Star helicopter responded and took the boy to an area trauma unit. Despite the lifesaving efforts of first responders and hospital staff, he was pronounced deceased at Midstate Medical Center, according to police.

The 4-year-old child did not suffer major injuries but was taken to Connecticut Children's Medical Center for evaluation.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
