Motorist Killed In Collision With Truck On I-691 In Meriden

MERIDEN, CT — A Waterbury man was killed in a two-vehicle crash on I-691 in Meriden Monday night, according to state police.

John Vincent Ireton Sr., 67, of Gertrude Avenue, was rushed to MidState Medical Center, where he died due to his injuries, police said.

The accident happened Monday around 10:20 p.m. on the westbound side on the highway, near Exit 3.

According to police, a preliminary investigation showed a truck, which was being operated by a Pennsylvania man, was traveling in the right lane and right shoulder.

Police said Ireton, who was driving a Chevrolet Prizm, was in the left lane of three when he apparently lost control, left the roadway and entered the right shoulder.

Ireton's vehicle collided with a metal guardrail on the right shoulder, then struck the rear of the truck, according to state police.

The operator of the truck was not injured.

The State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad responded to the scene and is helping with the investigation, which is ongoing.
