MERIDEN, CT — A man has been charged with murder in connection with a fatal stabbing in Meriden last week, police said in an update on Friday.
Police responded around 6:50 p.m. on Oct. 23 to reports of an injured person at the Green on the Green Smoke Shop at 29 Pratt St. The incident was determined to be a stabbing, which police said did not happen inside the business.
The victim ran into the store for assistance after the stabbing. Police believe the stabbing took place on Pratt Street on or near the Green.
The victim was identified as 51-year-old Marcus Mitchell.
Police said staff and bystanders at the scene provided aid to Mitchell, who was then taken to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Isaac Nelson was identified as a suspect in the homicide, and was taken into custody several hours after the killing on unrelated charges, according to police.
Police said members of the Detective Division obtained an arrest warrant for Nelson on Oct. 28 in connection with Mitchell's death.
Nelson, who police said remains incarcerated on other charges, was charged on Friday with murder. He was being held in lieu of a $1.5 million bond on the murder charge in addition to a $2 million bond for the initial incident that led to his arrest, according to police.
"The Meriden Police Department would like to extend our condolences to the family and friends of Marcus Mitchell," police wrote in a news release. "Our agency understands the impact that crimes of violence can have on a family as well as the community. We would also like to thank the members of the Meriden Police Department, our assisting agencies, and the State's Attorney's Office for their hard work, dedication, and swift investigative efforts, which helped bring justice to the victim and their family in a timely manner."
Police are asking any witnesses to the stabbing to contact Det. Case at 203-630-6296 or mcase@meridenct.gov.
