Why Go: Start your Cinco de Mayo celebration a little early. Help raise money for Casa Boricua, a struggling social service agency that supports the Hispanic community and promotes its cultural values. The agency has been hit hard by the current economy. While you're helping them help their clients, you can also enjoy live music, hors d'oeuvres and V-cocktails.

Why Go: Encourage healthy habits in your kids with fun family activities like zumba, karate, facepainting, a bounce house and more.

When/Where: Saturday, May 5, noon to 4 p.m., the green next to Harbor Park, 80 Harbor Drive, Middletown

Why Go: Your pet deserves a day out, too! Bring your pooch to get a free professional photo taken in exchange for a donation of much-needed canine-care supplies for the Meriden Humane Society. While the focus is on pit bulls, all breeds are welcome.

When/Where: Saturday, May 5, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., Meriden Public Library, 105 Miller Street

Why Go: If you're looking for a quieter activity, take in a free romantic comedy at the library: Under the Tuscan Sun. Diane Lane was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance.
