In Hidden History of Meriden, author and educator Justin Piccirillo uncovers the rich and often overlooked stories that shaped Meriden, Connecticut—a city once hailed as the “Silver Capital of the World.” From its early transformation from farmland to industrial powerhouse, Meriden’s legacy is brought to life through tales of Revolutionary War hero Captain John Couch, the mysterious Golden Parlour Mine, and the city’s pivotal role in the Underground Railroad.

Piccirillo explores Meriden’s contributions to World War II, earning it the title “The Nation’s Ideal War Community,” and highlights its cultural milestones, including the invention of the steamed cheeseburger and visits from U.S. presidents. The book also delves into the city’s social struggles, such as the Meriden Riot of 1837, and celebrates local icons like Dr. Grove Herrick Wilson, the father of Connecticut’s free school system.

Blending historical depth with local charm, this volume offers a compelling portrait of a community whose hidden stories continue to resonate today.
