THOMASTON, CT — A Thomaston man was arrested for killing a bear in an attempt to protect his dog, The Connecticut Post reported. William O'Connor, 26, was issued a summons for the illegal killing of the bear and, if convicted, will pay a $500 fine and/or serve 30 days in jail.

O'Connor's dog got into a conflict with a mother bear and her two cubs. O'Connor retrieved a rifle from his home and intended to fire a shot to scare the bear away.

However, the shot hit the bear, which later died in a neighbor's driveway.
