Driver Charged In Armed Robbery Of Man At Bank: Meriden Police

A man was robbed at gunpoint while he was making a deposit at a bank in Meriden, according to police.

MERIDEN, CT — A man has been arrested in connection with the gunpoint robbery of a man at a bank Saturday in Meriden, according to police.

Police responded to the area of Carl Street on Jan. 21 on the report of a “suspicious vehicle” in the area. As officers arrived in the area, they were flagged down by a man who said he was robbed at gunpoint while making a deposit at the Wells Fargo Bank at 55 Centennial Avenue, according to police.

The victim provided officers with a description of the suspect vehicle.

“It was determined the robbery suspect vehicle matched the same description as the suspicious vehicle that was initially called in by the concerned citizen,” police wrote in a news release.

Police said responding officers quickly found the suspect vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. Police determined that two suspects got out of the suspect vehicle, committed the robbery, and ran away as officers were arriving in the area, according to police.

The two suspects had not been apprehended as of Monday afternoon, according to police.

The driver of the suspect vehicle was identified as 20-year-old Jovanny Spangler, who was arrested in connection with the robbery.

“We would like to thank the public for their assistance in this investigation, this led to a quick response to the scene and as a result a suspect was located and apprehended,” police wrote. “We truly value the relationship between our department and the community and this is an example of that relationship working. This is still an active investigation and any information that will assist in this case should be directed to Detective Dorais 203-630-6280.

“Members of the Meriden Police Department would like to remind the public to be aware of their surroundings while utilizing ATM’s, especially during the after-hours. If suspicious activity is observed while banking, please contact the police.”

Spangler was charged with second-degree robbery and conspiracy to commit second-degree robbery.
