Flag Day Open House at the Iwo Jima Memorial

Saturday June 18th 9-4pm

Through a grant awared by the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, we are proud to present the Flag Day Open House at the Iwo Jima Memorial on the New Britain/Newington town line. The event is FREE and open to the public. Stop by throughout the day to see demonstrations and displays by various military groups and organizations. Opening ceremonies at 9:00 am followed by speakers. Listen to WWII era music and enjoy refreshments in the Skuttlebutt Canteen.

There will be presentations by Gary Roy about how, why and by whom the Memorial was built, Author Kerry Hotaling will talk about a book he wrote about his father, E. Gage Hotaling who was a Navy Chaplain on Iwo Jima and is featured on the monuments, Author Aaron Elson will be talking about the many WWII Vets he interviewed for his books, Ted Aub will be describing the Missing Man Table and our POW/MIA's.

There will be displays to view by the Patriot Guard Riders, posters and life stories of the 100 Connecticut KIA who served in the battle of Iwo Jima and a huge display of military memorabilia by Support Our Survivors of Iwo Jima. We will have activities for kids such as coloring, games and a trivia contest.
