It Is Possible For Caregivers To Enjoy A Carefree Vacation

Respite Care and Technology Can Ensure Elderly Loved Ones are Properly Cared For

Everyone deserves a relaxing summer vacation, but for full time caregivers of an elderly family member, it can seem impossible to get away. However, according to Ron D’Aquila, RN, Co-Founder and President of Assisted Living Services, Inc. (ALS) in Meriden, temporary respite care and wireless, sensor-based technologies can allow the family caregivers to enjoy a much-needed break.

“Many caregivers may not know that agencies like ours offer temporary respite care by providing specially trained staff for a few hours a day or up to 24 hour live-in care,” said D’Aquila.

Additionally, in certain circumstances, the agency can provide a travel companion to assist with all aspects of the senior's daily care, so that the individual can also enjoy a getaway, while the family caregiver can have a more relaxing vacation.

D’Aquila notes there are various programs in Connecticut that may be able to help pay for short term respite care depending on availability and eligibility. The National Family Caregiver Support Program or the Connecticut Statewide Respite Program are funding sources that family caregivers can explore.

Through its sister company Assisted Living Technologies, Inc. (ALT), wireless technology can be utilized to supplement or augment caregiving. As examples, there are technologies available that can improve or ensure that medications are taken properly. Mobile Personal Emergency Response systems work anywhere in the United States should an individual need immediate assistance. The person can be located via the systems' GPS and cellular technology.

“We work with each client and family to find the type of care and technology that works best for their situation on a daily or temporary basis,” adds D’Aquila. “As a family owned company we understand it can be difficult to leave a loved one under someone else’s supervision. We are committed to providing an uninterrupted level of care so that caregivers can get the break they need.”
