Phew! We made it through another long and nasty winter here in Meriden. But do you still have the winter blahs when you look in the mirror? Along with getting some sunshine, I always find a new, chic haircut can be just what the doctor ordered to get me out of my funk. Jennifer Cosenza, owner of Jennifer’s House of Hair on Broad Street, agrees. She says, “When you look good, you feel good.”
Cosenza opened her salon in October 2003, on the ground floor of a large home that’s stood in Meriden since 1895. And with almost two decades of hair styling experience behind her, she says she’s seen it all – from bowl cuts, to bobs, to bangs.
“I feel that styles just keep coming around and around,” she says. “They just get a new twist to them.”

(If this is true, it’s a good thing I still have my hair crimper from the 1980s!)
Along with being a full service hair salon, Jennifer’s House of Hair also provides facials, manicures and pedicures, reflexology, and electrolysis. And if you’re a bride-to-be, they also do fancy up dos before your “I dos.”

Meriden Patch aked Cosenza if she herself had any hair regrets. She readily admits to one, from her childhood.
“I did have an asymmetrical kind of spiky mullet. It was very in back then, but looking back now…!”
Making woman pretty and men oh so handsome isn’t all Cosenza does for the city. She also believes it’s important for everyone to give back to the community.
For the past six years, Jennifer’s House of Hair has held a cut-a-thon for charity. This year’s event is on Saturday, June 18th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. One hundred percent of the proceeds will be divided between Meriden Wallingford Chrysalis (an organization that helps victims of domestic abuse) and Our Companions Animal Sanctuary. Events will include: haircuts, mini manis and pedis, chair massages, face painting, crafts, music and refreshments for sale.
Jennifer’s House of Hair has also taken part in St. Baldrick’s celebrations in Meriden over the years. Stylists shave the heads of volunteers every March, raising money for children fighting cancer.
Recognize the name Cosenza? Jennifer’s husband, Jim, who is a Meriden firefighter, is also the owner of Stormy Mountain Candle and was featured in a prior “It’s Your Business.”
