Longtime Maloney High School Coach Elected to State Coaches Hall of Fame

He and nine other individuals will be honored at the 40th annual induction dinner.

MERIDEN, CT — A longtime Bunnell High School coach is one of 10 individuals who will be honored at the 40th annual Hall of Fame induction dinner of the Connecticut High School Coaches Association, according to an announcement from the CHSCA.

Howie Hewitt has coached boys basketball since 1985 and baseball since 1995 at Maloney High School in Meriden. In 1,060 total coaching games, Hewitt has a career record of 654-406, 401 basketball victories and 253 in baseball.

His basketball team won the 2007-08 state championship and was runner-up in 2006-07. His baseball team was runner-up in 1995. He's reached the baseball semifinals three times and quarterfinals four times. In basketball, he's reached the semifinals twice and quarterfinals four times.

Hewitt's teams have won nine league championships, six in basketball and three in baseball. He was named CHSCA Basketball Coach of the Year in 2012-13 and New Haven Tap-Off Coach of the Year in 2007.

He was a Tap-Off Club Hall of Fame inductee in 2012 and a Meriden Boys Club Hall inductee in 2011. He received a CHSCA Service Award in 2010-11, having hosted the CHSCA Boys Basketball All-Star game for 24 years. He also served as athletic director at Maloney for four years, assistant AD for 12 years, and has been interim AD on five occasions. He also coached golf for five years and cross country for two at Maloney.
