Victim Beaten To Death With Baseball Bat, Suspect Shot By Police: Meriden PD

MERIDEN, CT — A man accused of beating a person to death with a baseball bat during a domestic violence incident was hospitalized Sunday after being shot by a police officer, according to Meriden police.

Police responded around 10 a.m. to Sagamore Road on the report of a domestic violence incident that involved some type of weapon, according to police.

Arriving officers saw a man “violently striking a victim in the head with a baseball bat,” police wrote in a news release.

Police said the victim sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead.

“During this encounter with the suspect of the attack, an officer involved shooting occurred,” police wrote in the news release. “The suspect of the attack sustained injuries from gunfire and he was taken to a hospital where he is being treated.”

The officer also went to an area hospital where he was examined and then released from care, according to police.

“Officers are often sent on calls not knowing what is actually occurring until they arrive,” Meriden Police Chief Roberto Rosado said. “This is a unique case that reminds us that the dangers of police work is real.”

The names of the suspect and victim are not being released at this time, police said on Sunday.

“We share our deepest sympathy with the victim’s family, friends and those impacted by this case,” police wrote in the news release. “This is an isolated incident and there is no concerns or danger to the general public.”

The officer-involved shooting portion of the case will be investigated by the Inspector General’s office. Connecticut State Police have taken over the homicide investigation related to the domestic violence incident, according to police.

The Meriden Police Department is “committed to assisting and working with both the Inspector General’s office and the Connecticut State Police,” according to the news release.
