Man Accused of Sexually Assaulting 10-Year-Old in Meriden Charged in 2012 Rape

DNA evidence linked him back to the crime after a woman came forward following the publication of his October arrest, police said.

The man who allegedly sexually assaulted a 10-year-old Meriden girl in October was charged with another count of sexual assault for an incident that reportedly happened in March 2012.

Desmond James, 23, was arrested after he allegedly broke into a Meriden house and sexually assaulted a 10-year-old. The victim’s mother saw him as he was leaving.

His arrest was heavily publicized and a woman came forward to police to report that James sexually assaulted her in 2012 when she was 19.

Police obtained a DNA sample from James and compared it to the woman’s rape kit and a positive match was made.

The woman was walking on EAst Main Street on March 21, 2012 in the early morning hours when she encountered a man who began walking with her. He allegedly forced her into a backyard in the area of Foster Street between Lincoln and Colony streets and raped her.

She escaped and ran onto Colony Street where she waved down a motorist who drove her to a police station.

James was charged with first-degree sexual assault, and third-degree assault. He was already being held on a $1 million and an additional $500,000 bond was placed on him.

During 2012 James was on transitional supervision from the Department of Correction.
