Man On Parole Burglarized 2 Homes In Meriden: Police

The man is accused of trying to break into two homes after a car accident in Meriden, according to police.

MERIDEN, CT — A man who was out on parole is accused of burglarizing two homes in Meriden in October, according to police.

Police responded to the area of Westfield Road on Oct. 17 on the report of a motor vehicle accident. While officers were on the way to the scene, a report of a burglary-in-progress on nearby Reynolds Drive was reported, according to police.

The caller told police that a man had broken into their home and was demanding the resident’s car keys.

“The homeowner was able to scare the suspect out of his home,” police wrote in a news release.

While the officers were at the home on Reynolds Drive, another call came in from Country Club Drive about a man trying to break into another home, according to police.

“The male had broken out the window of a side door and was attempting to enter the home,” police wrote. “The resident was able to keep the door closed and locked until the male gave up and left.”

Officers quickly responded to the home on Country Club Road and were able to detain a man that matched the description of the suspect from the two burglaries, according to police.

Police said the suspect was identified as Auston Shaw, 37, who was charged in connection with the motor vehicle accident that night.

“Detective Pellegrini took over the burglary investigation from the patrol division and with the assistance of the State’s Attorney’s Office in Meriden, two arrest warrants were approved for Shaw,” police wrote.

Shaw was arrested Nov. 29 on two warrants and charged with criminal attempt at first-degree burglary, first-degree burglary, criminal attempt at third-degree larceny, third-degree criminal mischief and two counts of first-degree criminal trespass. He was held in lieu of bonds totaling $70,000.

Shaw was on parole at the time of the incidents and his parole officer was notified of the arrests, police said.
