Meriden Abandons Plan to Hire Park Rangers: Report

The proposal called for the hiring of two park rangers who would patrol the refurbished Meriden Green.

MERIDEN, CT — A plan to hire two park rangers to patrol the refurbished Meriden Green has been scrapped by the city, reports the Meriden Record-Journal.

Instead, the city will devise another plan to keep the 14-acre park safe, including the possibility of increasing police patrols. The rangers were envisioned as working 10 months out of the year at a starting salary of nearly $40,000, an amount ultimately deemed too expensive.

Currently, the police department is handling the patrolling of the park, but whether that will continue has not been decided. The park's hours will increase to 5 a.m. to midnight, which is partly prompting the need for some sort of increased enforcement presence.
