Meriden Adding Another SRO to Patrol Elementary Schools

The long time DARE program will be cut.

Meriden plans to add a sixth police officer to patrol its schools, but in order to do so the city will eliminate its Drug Abuse Resistance Education, or DARE program in the schools, which has been a staple for more than 20 years, the Meriden Record Journal reports.

Police officials say the health class covers a lot of what the DARE program has covered, and that there is a need to have a full-time police officer patrol the eight elementary schools, the Record Journal reports.

Currently, Meriden has five SROs, one each in its three high schools and one each in the middle schools. School officials endorsed the change.
