MERIDEN, CT — The city of Meriden has announced that they will continue with high school football season for the fall 2020 season, according to a document from the city. City officials wrote that football has been classified as a higher risk activity.

However, the city has been informed that football would proceed as a club or individual student choice sport, which would prevent the city from monitoring the sport.

The city wrote the following: "While the City does not recommend that game play occur, which is the current CT DPH and local health department recommendation, we recognize that high school football is going to occur and we wish to mitigate the risk of COVID 19 exposure."

The city noted that any player, coach, assistant coach, or anyone associated with the team who has had a positive COVID-19 test will be required to quarantine for 14 days.

The city also said that if the state's COVID positivity rate exceeds 5 percent on any day during the football season, games will be halted.
