Meriden Man Found Guilty Of Robbery, Kidnapping During Facebook Marketplace Transaction: Officials

Authorities said the man strangled the victim to the "point of unconsciousness" and took their vehicle and drove them from the scene.

MERIDEN, CT — A Meriden man has been convicted by a jury in connection with a robbery and kidnapping of a man during a Facebook Marketplace transaction, according to officials.

Addison Clegg, 24, was found guilty by a jury on Jan. 12 of first-degree kidnapping, first-degree robbery, first-degree strangulation, stealing a firearm, and criminal possession of a firearm, New Britain State’s Attorney Christian M. Watson announced.

“At trial it was proven that during a Facebook Marketplace transaction for sneakers, the defendant strangled the victim to the point of unconsciousness, allowing another individual to take the victim’s legally registered 9mm firearm and the victim’s vehicle, and drive the unconscious victim from the scene,” officials wrote in a news release from the Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice. “When the victim regained consciousness, he escaped from the moving vehicle on Cromwell Avenue in Rocky Hill, which resulted in serious injuries, including a broken foot.”

Clegg is scheduled to be sentenced March 25.

“The victim’s courage cannot be understated. But for his quick thinking under terrifying conditions, allowing him to escape from his abductors, who knows how this violent encounter would have ended?” said Senior Assistant State’s Attorney David Clifton and Inspector Edward Apicella, who prosecuted the case.
