Meriden Men's-Only Sport Banquet Draws Ire, Some Ask for Change
The event is only open to men, meaning that female friends and family members can't see honorees receive the award.

Some are criticizing a men’s only sports banquet after the mother of one award winner wasn’t allowed to come.
Mary Janiga, 89, wanted to see her son Rob Janiga at the annual Meriden Sorts Reunion Dinner, where he was honored as Sportsmen of Distinction, according to the Record-Journal.
Meriden Fire Lieutenant Maggie Bender wrote to the paper and said it’s silly not to allow women to the event in 2015.

Other winners of the award said that women should not only be allowed to attend, but be honored as well.
