40-year-old Karin Ziolkowski remains hospitalized.

MERIDEN, CT — Karin Ziolkowski, the 40-year-old Meriden mother whose son died in a Nov. 14 house fire, remains hospitalized, and the investigation into the intentionally set fire is continuing, according to police.

Ziolkowski has been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit, wrote Sgt. Darrin McKay in a statement. She is "recovering and progressing well," but McKay could not disclose any additional information.

How long she might remain hospitalized is unknown; after the fire, officials said she and her son, Elijah, suffered from smoke inhalation.

"At this time our investigation has been officially deemed to be an active arson investigation," wrote McKay in an earlier statement. "This is based upon the facts and circumstances as to the nature of the fire and this information has been provided by the City Fire Marshall. Of course we will be working collaboratively with the Fire Marshall and members of the Meriden Fire Department.

"As to the circumstances which led the Fire Marshall to determine that this was a case of arson; unfortunately I cannot discuss this at this time as to do so could potentially jeopardize the investigation," he added.
