Mosque Files Suit Against City Of Meriden

A Middletown mosque attempting to relocate to Meriden is claiming the city violated its First Amendment rights.

MERIDEN, CT - A Middletown mosque planning to relocate is suing Meriden's Planning Commission, claiming its constitutional rights to religious freedom and discrimination were violated, according to The Meriden Record-Journal.

The Omar Islamic Center filed the suit in U.S. District Court, challenging the commission's March decision to deny the mosque a permit to relocate to a 999 Research Parkway facility. They claim that the commission's decision places an unfair burden on the center's religious exercise.

The commission's reasons for the denial include that the site is zoned for manufacturing and that the mosque's application did not meet the qualifications for a special exemption.
