Storm Drain Explosion Investigated In Meriden
Police responded to a reported explosion inside a storm drain in Meriden, according to officials.

MERIDEN, CT — Police investigated a storm drain explosion in Meriden on Monday night, according to officials.
Police responded around 6 p.m. to a reported explosion inside of a storm drain, according to Lt. Darrin McKay.
McKay said responding officers did find smoke coming from a nearby storm drain in the area of Cross Street at Women’s Way.

“Officers’ initial investigation, determined that the blast did not appear to be overly large,” McKay wrote in an email. “There were no victims located, and no one appeared to be injured from this incident. There was also no notable damage located anywhere in the immediate area.
“A check of another adjacent storm drain revealed what appeared to be some type of device that was suspicious in nature. At that time officers cordoned off the immediate area to ensure that no bystanders would be injured. The Connecticut State Police bomb squad was contacted and they did respond.

“After taking all of the appropriate precautions, the device was removed from the second storm drain by personnel from the Connecticut State Police bomb squad. Upon examination, bomb squad personnel, determined that the item was not an explosive device.”
As of around 9:40 p.m., McKay said the scene was being cleared and there is “no danger to the community.”
