Student Brought BB Gun To School, Gets Arrested: Meriden Police

MERIDEN, CT — A student was arrested after police said he brought a BB gun to Platt High School in Meriden on Monday.

The Platt administration was made aware on Sept. 21 that a student was possibly in possession of a weapon on school grounds, according to police.

Police said the administration brought the student to the office where “he refused to allow the administration to conduct a search and then ran out of the building.”

School Resource Officer Ericka Garcia was notified that the student was possibly in possession of a weapon and fled from the school, according to police.

“SRO Garcia called for assisting units and the student was located on Stoddard Drive,” police wrote in a news release. “When Officer Garcia approached the student to conduct an investigatory detention, the student pulled away and started to run. Assisting officers arrived on scene to assist in detaining the student. The student continued to resist officers’ attempts to place him in handcuffs and sat on top of his backpack to keep officers away from it. It took several officers to place the student in handcuffs.”

Inside his backpack, police said they found a “black handgun style BB gun, that closely resembled a Glock Firearm and had a weapon light attached to it.”

The student was arrested and charged with possession of a facsimile firearm, breach of peace, dangerous weapon on school grounds, and interfering with officer. He was held in lieu of a $10,000 bond.

“The safety of the students in all Meriden Schools is of the utmost importance,” police wrote. “We will continue to work with the Meriden Board of Education to make sure that the Meriden Schools are a safe place for all children.”
