MERIDEN, CT - AT&T plans to close its three call centers in Meriden with workers having the option to move to call centers in Georgia and Tennessee, according to a statement from the Communication Workers of America. Many of the workers at the Meriden centers have been there for more than three decades.

The centers are responsible for providing reliability of 911 service in 22 states.

AT&T plans to move 90 jobs out of state, NBC reported. The union held a protest against this move Monday.

“I do not understand why we cannot continue to work in Connecticut,” Chief Steward John Vaitkus said in a statement.

Vaitkus is one of the workers who is slated for layoff along with many of his coworkers. “AT&T likes to talk about how it supports the communities where it has customers. The best way to help our communities in Connecticut is by keeping good jobs with family-supporting wages right here.”
