Teen, 17, Accidentally Shot By Father; Hospitalized: Meriden Police
The father was showing the teen, who was taken to a trauma center via Life Star, the gun to get him acclimated with the weapon, police said.
MERIDEN, CT — A 17-year-old boy was hospitalized Friday after being accidentally shot by his father, who had been showing him a gun, according to police.
Police responded to Forest Avenue around 3 p.m. on the report of a 17-year-old accidentally shot with a handgun. Officers found the boy, who had been shot once in the area of his right shoulder/chest, according to Lt. Darrin McKay.
McKay said the boy had been shot by his father, who had been “showing him the weapon.”

The father was “planning on getting his son acclimated with firearms in order to begin firearms training at a local gun range in the near future,” McKay wrote in a news release. The boy was shot with a 9mm handgun, and one shot was discharged, according to McKay.
McKay said nobody else was struck or injured in the incident.

The boy was transported via ambulance and subsequently taken to a trauma center via Life Star, McKay said.
The 17-year-old victim remained hospitalized and was listed in stable condition as of Saturday evening, McKay said in an update.
McKay said the investigation is "very active" and more information will be released as it progresses.
