8-Year-Old Boy Dies in 'Suspicious' Meriden House Fire; Police Take Over Investigation: Update

The child's mother remains hospitalized in critical condition following the Monday morning blaze on Davis Street.

MERIDEN, CT — An eight-year-old boy has died following the Monday morning fire on Davis Street in Meriden, and his mother remains hospitalized in critical condition, according to police.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released, pending notification of family, Meriden Police Sgt. Darrin McKay wrote in a statement. Both were victims of smoke inhalation and were removed from the house by emergency personnel.

"While on scene, the Fire Marshall advised members of our agency that the fire appeared to be suspicious in nature," wrote McKay in a statement. "Based upon this information, members of our detective division were called to the scene and this investigation is being conducted as one 'suspicious in nature' based upon the information provided by the Fire Marshall and members of the Meriden Fire Department."

The two were rescued from the house at about 7:21 a.m., writes Fox61 News.

They are both in critical condition, Meriden Fire Chief Ken Morgan told the Record-Journal. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Fire personnel had the fire under control before 8 a.m. It appeared to be concentrated on the second floor of the house, where smoke was seen billowing from a window.
