Connecticut's Best High Schools Rankings: Middletown is Average Among its Peers

The U.S. News Best High Schools 2013 rankings released this week name the top high schools in Connecticut, and Middletown is not among them. Reviewed were 21,035 U.S. public high schools and 39 state schools made the list out of 196 in the state.

Three of the four tested ratios in Middletown are near the state average: the student-to teacher ratio of 14-to-1, students' college readiness; and math proficiency is 74 percent.

The district's reading proficiency, however, is 70 percent, which is below the state average.

Connecticut has 11 gold medal schools, 24 silver medal schools and four bronze medal schools.

Students in Connecticut are assessed via the Connecticut Academic Performance Test, which gauges their skills in math, science, reading and writing. Particularly ambitious students can earn both high school and college credit through a concurrent enrollment program at the University of Connecticut.

6. Wilton High School
7. Staples High School, Westport 
8. William H. Hall High School, West Hartford
9. Joel Barlow High School, Redding 
10. Connecticut International Baccalaureate Academy, East Hartford 
    

Middletown High School has 1,357 students and 101 teachers, the study says, and students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement course work and exams. The AP participation rate at Middletown High School is 28 percent.

The student body makeup is 51 percent male and 49 percent female, and the total minority enrollment is 42 percent. 

The city's public school district average in reading proficiency is 70 percent in math and 74 percent demonstrate adequate college readiness.
