MIDDLETOWN, CT — The Connecticut Department of Transportation has selected New York-based STV to provide design services for a new electric bus maintenance and administration facility for River Valley Transit in Middletown.
The project is intended to support River Valley Transit's transition to a zero-emission bus fleet serving 16 communities in central Connecticut. The new facility will include space for light bus maintenance, administrative offices and employee parking while complementing operations at the agency's existing maintenance facility.
Under the contract, STV will work with the Connecticut Department of Transportation and River Valley Transit to develop the facility's layout, operational requirements and capacity for future fleet expansion. Plans call for a maintenance bay capable of servicing four full-size buses, equipped with plug-in charging stations, in-ground two-post vehicle lifts and support areas.
The design also includes a dedicated service lane featuring a bus wash, fare collection area and additional maintenance support space.
"Electrifying a transit fleet depends on infrastructure that performs as reliably as the vehicles themselves," said David Breza, vice president and Connecticut area manager for STV. "Purpose-built facilities enable agencies to scale electric fleets with confidence while maintaining service reliability as demand grows."
According to STV, the Middletown project reflects Connecticut's broader effort to replace diesel-powered buses with zero-emission vehicles, increasing demand for modern maintenance facilities designed to support electric bus technology.
STV has designed electric bus infrastructure projects nationwide, including maintenance facilities, charging systems and workforce development initiatives. The firm's portfolio includes the Gun Hill Bus Depot Electrification project in New York, the Charlotte Area Transit System Fleet Electrification and Workforce Development program in North Carolina and the LA Metro Zero-Emissions Bus Program in California.
The company also has completed numerous transportation and infrastructure projects in Connecticut, including work on the Reconstruction of Interchange 33 on Interstate 95, rehabilitation of the Arrigoni Bridge, the New Haven Yard West End Rail Storage project and renovations to Connecticut College's Shain Library.
