MIDDLETOWN, CT — Middletown residents looking to get out of this week’s extreme heat have five public cooling centers available as Connecticut activates its Extreme Hot Weather Protocol.
Gov. Ned Lamont announced the statewide protocol will take effect at 11 a.m. Tuesday nand remain in effect through at least 5 p.m. Thursday. According to the latest forecast, Connecticut is expected to see temperatures in the mid-to-high 90s during that stretch, with the heat index topping 100 degrees at times. The National Weather Service has also issued a heat advisory for most of the state on Tuesday and Wednesday.
In Middletown, residents who need air-conditioned relief are being directed to several public buildings across the city. The listed cooling centers are City Hall lobby, 245 deKoven Drive, open Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Middletown Police Department lobby, 222 Main St., open 24 hours a day, seven days a week; and the Middletown Senior Center, 61 Durant Terrace, open Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Additional cooling space is available at Russell Library, 123 Broad St., from Tuesday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and at St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen, 617 Main St., from Tuesday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The city’s notice encourages residents in need of respite from the heat to use those sites during the advisory period. The state protocol and local cooling center list come as forecasters warn of dangerous heat conditions across much of Connecticut.
For Middletown residents, the immediate impact is access to indoor, air-conditioned spaces during the hottest part of the week. The police department lobby offers the broadest availability because it is open around the clock, while the other sites are operating during scheduled daytime and evening hours.
