Trailer Leak In Middletown Draws Hazmat Response

MIDDLETOWN, CT — A leaking tractor-trailer carrying hydrochloric acid prompted an overnight hazardous materials response in Middletown.

The incident took place at Estes Trucking, 437 Middle St., according to the Westfield Fire Department.

The department said it was alerted to the leak at 10:21 p.m. Wednesday and found a 53-foot trailer leaking on arrival, with "a small vapor cloud overhead" and liquid moving toward a storm drain.

Also called to the scene to assist the Westfield Fire Department were the Guilford Fire Department hazardous materials team and the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, according to the department.

The incident happened at a remote location, and the department reported that no residential evacuations were necessary.

Crews worked to contain and clean up the leak for several hours. Cleanup was completed at 2:45 a.m., according to the Westfield Fire Department. The department reported that there were no injuries.
