5 Super Athletes With Ties To Middletown

Sports have a way of teaching invaluable life lessons — building character, fostering teamwork and strengthening the bonds within a community. In the Middletown area, these values have shaped some truly remarkable athletes from different eras, whose accomplishments continue to inspire.

Patch is celebrating five standout athletes whose achievements have left a lasting mark on our community. This list is just a snapshot, with countless other athletes helping shape the rich sports culture in our area.

1. Joey Logano (NASCAR)

Joey Logano was born in Middletown and began racing as a child before his family eventually moved to Georgia to further his career. He became one of NASCAR's biggest stars, winning the Daytona 500 in 2015 and NASCAR Cup Series championships in 2018, 2022 and 2024. Logano has also won more than 40 Cup Series races during his career.

2. Bill Denehy (Baseball)

Bill Denehy starred in baseball and basketball at Woodrow Wilson High School in Middletown before signing with the New York Mets out of high school. He made his MLB debut with the Mets in 1967 and went on to pitch for the Washington Senators and Detroit Tigers, appearing in 49 major league games. In his MLB debut, Denehy struck out nine batters, tying Tom Seaver's franchise record for strikeouts in a Mets debut at the time. The Society for American Baseball Research details his Middletown upbringing and rise to the majors.

3. Amari Spievey (Football)

Amari Spievey attended Xavier High School in Middletown before becoming a standout defensive back at Iowa. He earned first-team All-Big Ten honors in 2009 and was selected by the Detroit Lions in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Spievey played 35 NFL games over three seasons and recorded five interceptions. Pro Football Reference lists both Middletown as his birthplace and Xavier as his high school.

4. Sharon Parr (Swimming)

Sharon Parr became one of Middletown High School's most accomplished swimmers, holding school records in nine events when she graduated in 1986. She went on to St. John's University on a Division I scholarship, where she broke five school records and won the 1989 Big East championship in the 200 butterfly. Parr was inducted into the Middletown High School Wall of Fame in 2025. Middletown High School Athletics notes that she still holds four school records nearly 40 years after setting them.

5. Suki Hoagland (Figure Skating, Diving & Lacrosse)

Suki Hoagland was a national silver medalist in pairs figure skating in 1972 before becoming a remarkable multi-sport athlete at Wesleyan University in Middletown. She earned 10 varsity letters in field hockey, diving and lacrosse, including helping establish Wesleyan's women's lacrosse program and serving as a founder and co-captain. Hoagland was recently named to Wesleyan's 2026 Athletics Hall of Fame class, which recognized her contributions to women's sports as well as her athletic career. Wesleyan Athletics also notes that she helped establish the Suki Hoagland Award, which has honored contributions to women's athletics at Wesleyan for decades.
