Middletown Homicide Suspect Shot And Wounded By West Hartford Police After Pursuit Spills Into Hartford

MIDDLETOWN, CT — A suspect in a Middletown homicide was shot and wounded by police in Hartford overnight after a plate reader picked up his trail in West Hartford, both Middletown and West Hartford police said.

Middletown police responded to a call at about 3:23 p.m. Tuesday at a residence in the West Lake section of the city after receiving a report about a suspicious death. Officers found a woman deceased at the scene with a gunshot wound and "other injuries," police said.

Detectives with the Middletown Police Department's Investigative Services Division identified 43-year-old Barrington Oneil Brown Jr. of Middletown as a suspect, according to police.

Brown was tracked throughout the evening, and Middletown police issued a regional radio broadcast with information about a vehicle believed to be involved in the homicide.

The vehicle's registration was later detected by an automated plate reader in West Hartford, police said. West Hartford officers located the vehicle near New Park Avenue and attempted to stop it, but the vehicle fled, police said.

Officers deployed tire-deflation devices as the vehicle continued east on Flatbush Avenue into Hartford.

The vehicle eventually stopped near 50 Flatbush Ave. in Hartford, where an exchange of gunfire occurred between the suspect — Brown — and West Hartford officers, according to police.

Brown and "another person" were struck by gunfire and suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

No West Hartford officers were injured, police said.

Brown was taken into custody and transported to a medical facility. He was being held by Middletown police Wednesday morning pending arraignment on charges of murder, second-degree stalking and unlawful discharge of a firearm, police said.

The Connecticut Office of the Inspector General responded to the scene and assumed primary responsibility for investigating the officer-involved shooting.
