MILFORD — When Executive Director Leonora Rodriguez sat down with members one recent morning, she didn’t expect a casual conversation to spark a new idea for the Center. But as one longtime member described how life had changed with the passing of close friends, shrinking social circles, and the need to rebuild community, Rodriguez thought, how do we make new friends as we age?
That conversation became the seed for Speed Friendship, a social connection event to be held on Thursday, May 28 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, at the Milford Senior Center, 9 Jepson Drive. Designed for adults 65 and older, the event will offer a lively, rotating conversation format that allows participants to meet new people. Each brief exchange is guided by prompts that encourage storytelling, humor, and shared interests in just 5 minutes. It will conclude with social time with refreshments and an opportunity to reconnect with those they meet during the event.
Rodriguez began researching models that could inspire a fresh approach and discovered 'The Age of Love', a documentary exploring dating among adults over 70. While the film focused on romance, she envisioned something different for Milford, an opportunity not to find a date, but to find a new best friend. The result is an event that seeks connection in a welcoming environment.
“Connection is not a luxury, it’s a lifeline to remaining healthy,” Rodriguez said. “Older adults should have the same opportunities to meet new people and feel part of a community as with any age group. Speed Friendship is more than a fun idea, it’s a meaningful way to support emotional well‑being, reduce isolation, and remind people it’s never too late to find your BFF (best friend forever).”
The timing is significant. National Institute of Aging research continues to show that loneliness and social isolation pose serious health risks for older adults. Studies from the CDC (2024) link loneliness to higher rates of heart disease, stroke, depression, anxiety, and dementia. Nearly one in four older adults’ reports feeling lonely, and social isolation has been associated with cognitive decline and increased mortality. Whereas strong social ties are consistently connected to longer life expectancy, improved emotional well‑being, and better physical health.
The Milford Senior Center hopes the event will become a model for future programming focused on connection and community.
