The Ahrens Respite Program: A Community Lifeline

The Only Social Model Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias Program on Connecticut’s Shoreline

Milford, Connecticut — The Milford Senior Center is proud to highlight the Ahrens Respite Program, now in its 36th year of service to older adults and caregivers. As the only social‑model dementia respite program on the Connecticut shoreline, Ahrens continues to play a vital role in supporting families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

For more than three decades, the program has provided dementia‑friendly services, offering one of the state’s longest‑running, community‑based respite programs. The Ahrens Respite Program provides structured daytime engagement for older adults who do not require nursing‑level care and can benefit from socialization away from home. The program offers caregivers much needed essential time to work, rest, or manage personal responsibilities.

Operating Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM, the program offers a safe, supportive environment where participants engage in art, pet music therapies, exercise, conversation, and cognitive‑supportive activities designed to promote social connection and emotional wellbeing.

Program Coordinator Jill Taricani leads daily programming, supported by Program Assistant Gary Andreadis, who incorporates movement, mindfulness, and live music. Social Services Coordinator Christine Lyas works closely with families seeking support and also facilitates the Center’s caregiver support group with Stephanie Haig, Social Services Worker.

“The Milford Center has a long history of stepping forward to support older adults living with cognitive change,” said Executive Director Leonora Rodriguez. “The Ahrens Respite Program reflects the Milford Council on Aging’s commitment to dignity, inclusion, and meaningful engagement for every resident. Its 36‑year legacy is a testament to the compassion and dedication of this community.”

Recent enhancements to the program included evidence-based therapies such as pet therapy visits, which have become a beloved part of the program. Staff report increased smiles, conversation, and reminiscence among participants during these sessions.

To participate, individuals must be members of the Milford Senior Center. Membership is $25 for Milford residents and $45 for non‑residents. The daily program fee is $10 for residents and $15 for non‑residents, with an optional mini‑lunch available for $4.00.

“The Ahrens Respite Program is a lifeline for families,” Rodriguez added. “As one of the few remaining social‑model programs in Connecticut, it fills a critical gap in dementia‑friendly care for aging-in-place”
