Police Provide Update On License Plate Readers, Other Cameras In Milford

MILFORD, CT — Police provided residents with an update on the deactivation of license plate readers and speeding and red-light cameras in Milford.

All speeding and red-light cameras have been paused and are no longer recording violations, following the measure passed by the Board of Aldermen on Aug. 27.

Police said the license plate readers in the below locations were deactivated in August and are no longer operational. The physical devices are scheduled to be removed by the vendor on or about Sept. 21.

The deactivated license plate readers are located at:

• Gulf Street at New Haven Avenue
• Woodruff Avenue at Post Road
• Woodmont Avenue at Higgins Road
• Broad Street at High Street
• Anderson Avenue at Pepes Farm Road
• Merwin Avenue at Oxford Road
• Route 1 at School House Road
• Route 1 at the Connecticut Post Mall entrance
• Route 1 at the Connecticut Post Mall (East Town)

The remaining license plate readers are located at entry points into the city from neighboring towns, I-95, Route 15 and the Parkway feeder, police said.

The news comes after the Board of Aldermen voted last week on two resolutions. One of those limited license plate readers to only entry points around the city.

The other resolution declared a moratorium on the use of speeding and red-light cameras.

However, many opponents of the technology believe these actions didn't go far enough and favor a ban. Critics have said the cameras create a surveillance state and are a privacy violation.
