Milford Elks Lodge #1589 Honors Local Veterans with 13th Annual Veterans Boat Trip

MILFORD, Conn. — September 20, 2026 — Milford Elks Lodge #1589 continued a cherished tradition on Thursday, September 17, welcoming approximately 40 local veterans for its annual Veterans Boat Trip — an event centered on appreciation, connection, and the camaraderie shared among those who have served.

Organized by Jeff and Gail Hall, who have dedicated 13 years to coordinating the event, the trip brought together veterans from multiple generations and branches of the U.S. military for a scenic Thimble Islands cruise, followed by a prime rib dinner at Milford Elks Lodge #1589.

The event was funded in part through a $1,000 Freedom Grant from the Elks National Foundation, part of the Foundation's larger grant program that funds Elks Lodges across the country to strengthen their communities. Freedom Grants specifically give Lodges the opportunity to use that funding to directly serve and support local veterans and active-duty military members. The grant reflects the Elks' longstanding commitment to identifying local needs and creating meaningful, hands-on programs that provide support and connection to those who have served.

Milford's grant funding was supplemented by generous donations from the Milford Elks Lodge #1589 membership and Milford Elks Riders #1589, allowing the Lodge to expand the experience for the approximately 40 veterans who participated. Lodge members and community supporters also donated their time, goods, services, and other in-kind contributions to help make the event possible.

Veterans spent the afternoon enjoying the cruise, refreshments, conversation, and time together before returning to the Lodge, where volunteers prepared and served a prime rib dinner. Each veteran also received a goody bag and went home with a raffle gift, including gift baskets, gift cards, and other donated items.

But the tradition has always been about more than what is on the itinerary. Bringing together veterans from different eras and branches of service creates an opportunity to share stories, form connections, and simply enjoy being among others who understand the meaning of service. It also gives Milford Elks members an opportunity to personally demonstrate the gratitude and respect at the heart of the organization's longstanding commitment to veterans.

Seeing the tradition continue after 13 years under the Halls' leadership— supported by fellow Elks, the Elks National Foundation, the Milford Elks Riders, and community partners — is a testament to how deeply that commitment runs throughout the Milford Lodge.

"This day is about much more than a boat ride or a dinner. It's about spending time together, building relationships, and making sure our veterans know how deeply their service and sacrifices are appreciated," said Mary Garfield, Exalted Ruler of Milford Elks Lodge #1589.
