MILFORD, CT — Beth-El Center held a groundbreaking ceremony Monday for a new $16 million facility that will expand housing and support services for people experiencing homelessness and housing instability in the Greater Milford area, according to a statement.

The new operations center, at 995 Bridgeport Ave., will provide emergency shelter, permanent supportive housing and other services for individuals, families and veterans.

The facility will include 15 permanent supportive housing units, 10 emergency shelter units for families and 12 micro-shelter units for individuals and couples.

Other features will include a large kitchen and dining room, a 24-hour community service hub, spaces for workforce training and education, family lounges and a children's playground.

"Our mission has always been rooted in treating every individual with dignity and respect while helping people move toward greater independence," Beth-El Center Executive Director Jennifer Paradis said in a statement. "This new Beth-El Center home represents an important opportunity to build on that mission, strengthen our services, and create a welcoming community resource where people can access the support, services and opportunities they need to move forward."

Beth-El Center has served the community for more than 40 years, providing emergency shelter, meals, homelessness prevention services and other assistance.

State construction grants and other funding will cover most of the project's estimated $16 million cost.

However, the organization has launched a $2 million capital campaign to help pay for furnishings, equipment, technology, additional programs and other expenses.

Paul B. Bailey Architects designed the facility, and La Rosa Construction Group was selected as the builder.
