Milford Trees Inc Concludes Its Fall Planting Season

Milford Trees Inc (MTI), a local non-profit committed to urban reforestation, had a very busy fall planting season.

MTI donated trees and time to help the Victory Drive neighborhood replant in late October.  While the neighborhood had lost about a dozen trees within the past 10 years, this post World War II neighborhood which once had streets canopied by huge maples, had come to look barren and neighbors old and new agreed it was essential to work together to re-establish the beauty that had been lost.

Neighborhood residents appealed to MTI for help.  MTI volunteers worked alongside neighborhood residents to reach out to Call Before You Dig, pick strategic planting locations, and plant 9 new trees in the neighborhood including red maples, a lilac tree, a dogwood tree, white oaks, and a honey locust.

The next project MTI undertook was planting 19 trees in Milford Cemetery on the Prospect Street side of the cemetery.  This planting was in response to the new construction that abuts the cemetery.

MTI, in coordination with Milford Cemetery, planted 19 trees along the fence that borders the new structure.  This was a two weekend project that could not have been accomplished without the help of the grounds crew at Milford Cemetery in helping to load and unload the trees and store them until they could be planted, as well as students from The Academy in Milford for helping to prep trees for their transfer to the cemetery.

MTI wrapped up its planting season in the Devon area of the city planting 26 trees along the perimeter of the fields at the Westshore Recreation Center along Benham Avenue.  This will not only allow for a more park like appearance for this open space but with also help with providing shade along the sidewalks as well as to people utilizing the fields.  This project was a two weekend project as well.

MTI would like to thank the grounds crew at Milford Cemetery for helping to store some of the trees from the Prospect Street project until being ready for the planting at Westshore and delivering them as well.  Additionally, many thanks go out to the group of students from The Academy who came out to help dig holes and plant under the direction of Kate Orrechio from Milford Trees Inc.

During this fall planting season MTI was able to replace and plant 52 trees on both municipal and private property throughout the City of Milford.

Special thanks needs to go out to everyone who made this such a successful planting season:  the grounds crew at Milford Cemetery, students from the Academy, Rachel Holmes and Chris Donnelly from the CT DEEP Division of Forestry for coming out to support MTI in their local efforts and of course all the Milford Trees Inc volunteers that show up to help dig, haul, plant, fertilize and water all of the trees planted.
