Auditions open for the MAC’s Eastbound Theatre adaptation of the classic Greek drama, “Antigone”

Event Details
Eastbound Theatre, a division of Milford Arts Council (MAC), has announced auditions for “Antigone” by Jean Anouilh with translation by Lewis Galantiere, a modern adaptation of the Sophocles classic Greek tragedy. Auditions will be held at the Margaret Egan Center, 35 Matthews Street, Milford, CT, Monday and Tuesday, July 28 and 29, beginning at 7 pm. Call backs, if needed, are Wednesday, July 30 at 7 pm. Performance dates for the show are Friday through Sunday, September 12 to 27, 2025.
First performed in Paris in 1942, the play reflects the main character’s rejection of authority to parallel the French Resistance of the Nazi occupation at the time. The story follows Antigone’s defiance of an edict by the authoritarian King Creon that forbids her to provide her brother with a proper burial. Her conviction to doing the right thing in the face of tyranny humanizes the character and makes her sacrifice all the more tragic as it questions civil rights, ethics and the need for activism.
Auditions may be cold readings of sides (excerpts) from the show or can be previewed/downloaded beforehand by visiting the “Auditions“ page under the “Theatre“ section of the MAC’s website: milfordarts.org.
