City of Milford Weathered Storm

All considered the Small City with a Big Heart managed to handle Hurricane Irene pretty well, fire officials report.

Fire Department spokesman Christopher Zak told Milford Patch:

-- No fatalities.

-- No casualties -- emergency personnel or civilians.

-- 50 percent of Milfordites lost power.

-- emergency shelter at Jonathan Law HS is open till 9 a.m. Monday.

-- many roads are closed due to downed power lines, fallen trees, and flooding.

-- There were more than 175 calls for emergency assistance.

-- More than 1,000 non-emergency calls were made to the Emergency Operations Center.

-- Thousands of residents evacuated their homes.

-- The neighborhoods hit the hardest were the Point Beach, Beachland and the Melba Street areas, East Broadway by Silver Sands, and Milford Point. There was some "over your head" flooding, Zak said.

-- Several buildings were partially collapsed or knocked off their foundations. The building inspector was checking to make certain everything was structurally sound.

"We really need to stress that there are a lot of power lines down and, as the power starts to come back up, people should be cautious that they're not walking and being injured by these downed power lines," Zak said.
