Composting Event Planned In Milford To Explain Local Program

MILFORD, CT — Residents are invited to learn more about composting and waste reduction at an upcoming community event hosted by All In for Milford.

The event, titled “Talking Trash,” is scheduled for Tuesday, April 28, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Mary Taylor Memorial United Methodist Church. Organizers say the session will focus on how Milford’s composting program works and how residents can take part.

Volunteers, local officials and environmental advocates are expected to discuss how organic waste is handled in the city, along with the impact composting can have on disposal costs and greenhouse gas emissions. Representatives from Milford Public Works and neighboring communities are also expected to share insight into successful food-waste programs.

“Giving your leftovers a second life as compost nourishes our soil and protects our environment," organizer Charlie Montalbano said in a statement. "At the same time, removing food scraps from our waste stream saves on disposal costs, and reduces greenhouse gasses. It’s a fairly easy process with numerous benefits. In addition, we will also discuss where your cardboard and glass are really supposed to go.”

The discussion will also include how local schools are addressing food waste and how those efforts affect the city’s overall waste stream.

In addition to the April 28 event, organizers will host a booth during Milford’s Earth Day celebration on Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the downtown green along Broad Street.

Both events are free and open to the public.
