CT Weather: Heavy Rain, 70 MPH Winds May Cause Power Outages

The National Weather Service warned that damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines.

CONNECTICUT — A powerful storm will impact the weather in Connecticut on Monday and it is possible that parts of the state, especially near the immediate coast could see wind gusts up to 70 mph.

Power outages are expected on Monday along with heavy rain and possibly strong thunderstorms.

The National Weather Service said the precipitation begins after midnight in the western part of the state and wind gusts increase to 3o to 40 mph by daybreak along the coast.

"Monday will see rain showers, moderate to heavy at times with a chance for thunderstorms. There may be an isolated severe storm that moves through, mainly across western areas. Conditions will also become very windy, with wind gusts 65-70 mph at the coast, and as high as 60-65 mph inland... 1 to 2 inches of rain is expected, with locally higher amounts possible in any thunderstorms and across higher terrain.

"The associated cold front will move through late in the day Monday into Monday night with dry conditions returning around midnight and persisting into Tuesday," the weather service said.

Southern Fairfield, Southern New Haven County: A High Wind Watch remains in effect from Monday morning through Monday afternoon. "South winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 70 mph possible.

"Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines. Even sturdy and well secured tent structures could be damaged. Widespread power outages are possible. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles."


Northern Fairfield, Northern New Haven: A High Wind Watch remains in effect from Monday morning through Monday afternoon. "South winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 65 mph possible.

Hartford, Tolland and Windham County: A High Wind Watch remains in effect from Monday morning through Monday evening. "South winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 65 mph possible."

Litchfield County: A High Wind Watch remains in effect from Monday morning through Monday evening. "South winds 15 to 30 mph with gusts up to 60 mph possible Monday. Winds will shift west by early evening and will be the strongest down the Mohawk Valley into the Capital District with gusts up to 60 mph possible."

WTNH News 8 Meteorologist Ashley Baylor said on social media, "In addition to 1-2" of rain, we will be tracking some high wind gusts. The highest gusts will peak between 2-5 PM (Monday) which is when the tide will come up. The shoreline should be aware of coastal flooding, splash over in the beach communities, and scattered power outages."

WTNH News 8 Chief Meteorologist Gil Simmons said on social media, "Brutal weather coming for tomorrow (Monday). Wind gusts 50-70 mph with power outages. Prepare your generator if you have one. Heavy rain with 1” to 3” expected. Make sure your sump pump & basement is ready. Huge waves crashing directly against immediate shoreline & beach homes. Roughest time is 10AM-7PM Monday.
