New Details On How Much Ice, Snow To Expect Friday in CT

The National Weather Service released new details on how much ice and snow to expect and when it will begin.

CONNECTICUT — First, some good news. Connecticut will see temperatures top 40 degrees on both Wednesday and Thursday and it seems like we rarely, if ever, hit that mark during the month of January.

And that ends the good news portion of this weather story. The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for the entire state for some stormy weather Thursday afternoon and Friday.

Everyone will start with rain on Thursday afternoon, and it may be heavy at times, and then on Friday everyone transitions to a period of ice and then a little snow. Areas along the immediate coast will stay rain for the longest period of time. Areas away from the coast and in northern Connecticut may see an inch of ice and snow accumulation.

Southern Connecticut

"A cold front will move through late Thursday night into Friday with quickly falling temperatures behind it. Rain Thursday night will change to a wintry mix from northwest to southeast, with several hours of freezing rain, sleet, and snow. This will lead to ice accretion on any untreated surfaces, making travel hazardous potentially for both the morning and evening commutes on Friday. Additionally, any standing water from rainfall and melting snow will freeze, exacerbating these conditions."

Hartford/Tolland/Windham County

"Rain will changeover to a wintry mix of sleet, snow and perhaps a brief period freezing rain Friday morning. There is considerable uncertainty in how quickly things changeover and specific totals. Winter Weather headlines will likely be needed. This will cause travel impacts due to slick roads for the Friday morning and evening commute."

Litchfield County

"Wintry precipitation including snow, sleet and freezing rain are likely Thursday into Friday with a slow moving front and low pressure system moving along it. The eventual location of the front will determine precipitation types, amounts and their locations. Winter Weather headlines will likely be needed later in time."
