Snow Accumulation Estimates Significantly Rise For Friday Storm In CT

Here is an updated look at how much snow you can expect by Friday afternoon in Connecticut. A winter storm watch has been issued.

CONNECTICUT — Some towns in Connecticut exceeded 70 degrees on Wednesday, and by Friday afternoon some towns could have nearly a foot of snow on the ground.

New England weather is never dull. The snow accumulation estimates are all over the place for the Friday storm.

Areas on the immediate coast may only see an inch or two of snow, a brief period of ice and then plain rain. While areas in the far northern parts of the state could see nearly a foot of heavy snow.

For all the areas in between, it seems like a moderate sized snowstorm is on the horizon along with a coating of ice.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for the entire state, minus the immediate coast.


Here are the updated details based on where you are, via the National Weather Service:

1-95 coastal towns: "A wintry mix of snow and sleet is expected to develop Thursday night into early Friday morning. The precip then changes to freezing rain and rain after day break Friday morning. Impacts to the Friday morning commute are possible, especially away from the immediate coast where the wintry mix hangs on longest before a changeover to plain rain."

Forecast details:

Thursday Night: Snow after 10pm, mixing with sleet after 4am. Low around 28. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. Light east wind increasing to 5 to 10 mph in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Friday: Rain, snow, freezing rain, and sleet before 2pm, then rain and sleet likely between 2pm and 4pm, then a chance of rain and snow after 4pm. High near 37. Wind chill values between 20 and 30. East wind 9 to 14 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. New snow and sleet accumulation of around an inch possible.

Friday Night: A 30 percent chance of snow before 7pm.


Inland sections of southern Connecticut: A winter storm watch is in effect from Thursday evening through Friday afternoon. "Heavy mixed precipitation possible. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches and ice accumulations of one to two tenths of an inch possible."

Forecast details:

Thursday Night: Snow, mainly after 1am. Steady temperature around 29. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. Calm wind becoming east 5 to 7 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

Friday: Rain, snow, freezing rain, and sleet before 2pm, then rain and sleet likely between 2pm and 4pm, then a chance of snow after 4pm. High near 35. Wind chill values between 20 and 30. Northeast wind around 9 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. New snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Friday Night: A 30 percent chance of snow, mainly before 7pm.

Hartford/Tolland/Windham County: A winter storm watch is in effect from late Thursday through Friday evening. "Heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 8 inches possible...Snowfall rates of an inch per hour or greater will be possible for a period of time."

Forecast details:

Thursday Night: Snow, mainly after 1am. Low around 21. Calm wind becoming northeast 5 to 8 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

Friday: Snow, freezing rain, and sleet before 2pm, then rain likely between 2pm and 3pm, then a chance of snow after 3pm. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 33. Northeast wind around 9 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow and sleet accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.

Friday Night: A chance of snow, mainly before 7pm.


Litchfield County: A winter storm watch is in effect from Thursday evening through Friday evening. "Heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches possible. Some sleet and freezing rain may occur for areas along and south of Interstate 90 Friday morning."
