Debate Over Short-Term Rentals Draws Strong Opinions In Milford

Residents and local short-term rental owners spoke at a recent Board of Aldermen meeting, as the city weighs taking action.

MILFORD, CT — A proposed ordinance regulating short-term rentals sparked passionate testimony from residents during a recent Milford Board of Aldermen meeting, with some urging stricter rules and others warning that new restrictions could harm homeowners and the local tourism economy.

Several residents who operate short-term rentals said the properties provide important income and bring visitors to the city. One homeowner said data he reviewed shows roughly 130 to 135 short-term rentals in Milford — a small portion of the city’s roughly 22,000 housing units — and argued that claims of a dramatic increase in listings are overstated.

He and other speakers said most rentals are run by long-time property owners rather than corporations, and that many hosts carefully screen guests and prohibit parties.

“We’re not opposed to regulation,” another resident told aldermen, suggesting a registration system, a required local contact available 24/7, and escalating penalties for properties that generate repeat complaints.

Supporters of short-term rentals also said visitors help support local businesses and tourism, particularly in beach neighborhoods where families return year after year.

But other residents urged the city to adopt stronger rules, citing concerns about noise, parties, parking issues, and the potential loss of long-term housing. One speaker said a petition calling for stricter regulations had gathered nearly 300 signatures from residents.

The petition advocates for tighter ordinances that could include minimum stay requirements as well as limits on occupancy and events at rental properties.

City officials have indicated they are working to craft regulations that balance the interests of short-term rental owners with the concerns of neighbors.

The board's agenda at its Monday meeting did not include any items on short-term rentals.
