Dog Left In Hot Car Dies, Milford Man Charged: Police

A man is facing animal cruelty charges after leaving two dogs in a car while he went into a store, police said.

MILFORD, CT — A Milford man is facing accusations that he left two dogs inside a car, which led to the death of one of the dogs, according to a police arrest log.

John Torres, 72, was charged with two counts of cruelty to animals.

Torres turned himself in on an active arrest warrant on July 10.

Police said he left two dogs in the car while he went inside a store, "resulting in the death of one of the dogs." Milford Police Public Information Officer Brianna MacDonald said Torres went into the CVS at 989 Boston Post Road at 1:30 p.m. He was inside for 28 minutes.

Torres left the dogs in the vehicle, which was not running, with the windows rolled up, police said.

The incident occurred on June 25, MacDonald confirmed. On June 25, the National Weather Service said the expected high temperature would be in the mid 90s.

The dog that died was a French bulldog, MacDonald said.

Torres was released on a promise to appear in Milford Superior Court on Aug. 7.
