MILFORD, CT — The Planning and Zoning Board denied a requested zoning change that would have allowed electronic billboards in certain parts of the city. More than 30 people wrote letters in opposition to the proposed change.

The board voted 6-4 against the motion at its Tuesday meeting. The regulation change was proposed by the owner of several I-95 billboards. Up to five current billboards could have been converted if the motion passed, City Planner David Sulkis said.

Board Chairman Jim Quish said the proposed change would have given the board discretion on any future electronic billboards, since applicants would have to apply for a special permit.

“Our action today will not, in my mind, predict or alter the future,” he said.

Some board members worried that electronic billboards would eventually make their way to downtown and the beach area.

“I think once you open the door to electronic billboards somewhere on a highway, you are going to open the door to electronic billboards all through the city,” board member Ethan Hirsch said.
