Milford, CT. The public is invited to the ‘Sound Yoga Kids’ Open House on Saturday, August 25th, 10 a.m. at Milford J.K.A. Shotokan, a karate school and yoga class center at 232 Boston Post Road. The new children’s yoga program - with classes to launch September 15 - will be showcased. Children ages 2 and older may participate in free classes at the Open House from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by pizza, refreshments, and more fun. Free kids yoga classes at the event include: Story Time Yoga - ages 2 -5, Yoga Games - ages 3 and up, and Yoga Obstacle Course - ages 3 and up. Space limited, so RSVP's encouraged

The Sound Yoga kids program was developed by instructor Jen Carter, 200HR RYT, and a Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga teacher certified by the Chopra Center in California. She recently completed an additional 30HR certification focused in kids by Karma Kids Yoga in New York.

According to Jen, "I chose to focus on Yoga for Kids because children are born yoginis - they practice naturally as part of development. Observing an infant on their belly, as they lift their limbs off the floor they form into a Locust pose, and move into a Cobra pose with ease. An infant will often scoot around into a Pigeon pose. As infants begin to crawl, they naturally stretch themselves into a Cow pose and reach their necks up to see around them. As kids learn to walk, they first lift themselves into a Downward Facing Dog pose."

During her extensive training, Jen learned that a successful children’s yoga class must:

  • Stimulate the imagination
  • Incorporate movement and breathing
  • Be challenging and fun
  • Be fair and non-competitive
  • Be positive and peaceful
  • End with relaxation and a sense of calm

Adds Jen, "Yoga is a discipline that can lead kids on the path toward a calm and balanced mind, as well as help them to build a strong and flexible body - tools they can use in their everyday lives."
